A breath away from the playoff

With
a final round in 68 shots, Emanuele "Peppo" Canonica
marked the best performance (out of five matches played) of
his adventure at the American Tour: placing himself seventh
at the Nissan Open on the Riviera
Country Club in California, in front of the number one David
Love III and of Tiger Woods
among the others. It is important not only because it guarantees
him with a price of 113,900 dollars (around 250 million Italian
Lira), but because it assures his participation to the next
tournament (the Genuity Championship
at the Doral in Florida), without having to go through the pre-qualifications,
but most of all for the substantial injection of self-esteem
reached after a month of disappointments.
Due to an inopportune bogey on the last hole, Peppo lost the
opportunity to participate to the playoff (won by Robert
Allenby) to which six players, all placed even at -8,
only one shot less than Canonica, entered. "Too bad, but
it could have gone worse", says Peppo. "I hit a perfect
drive, for the second shot I played 2 iron too much to the left.
The ball stopped in a bad position, 5 cm from out of bounds,
in an ugly position, therefore I had to make two approaches
before arriving in the green and putting into the hole".
"When I realized that one less shot would have been enough
to qualify for the playoff, it caused me sorrow, but it's actually
a big satisfaction. I felt a little discouraged having been
eliminated for three times, but now that I have earned 114 positions
in the ranking, it's a sigh of relief". |
